Wellness Wednesday: Too Much Water… Say What?!

  May 16, 2018

Now that we are in full-blown SUMMER with hardly any Spring in between, we are all chugging more and more water everyday! Especially post workout when it feels like its 212 degrees in the gym. Yes boiling point. And it’s only going to get hotter, guys! Hydration is KEY when we are performing these exercises and wods at high intensity. Especially after this previous weekend’s events at the IronMom, we all need to be very careful of dehydration as well as hyperhydration. Did you know, you can actually drink TOO much water?! We know it sounds crazy especially as much as we sweat, but water intoxication is just as real as alcohol intoxication! And it can be detrimental to your health.

But what causes this? It’s actually an electrolyte imbalance. According to medicine.net, “The definition of water intoxication is: “A lowered blood concentration of sodium (hyponatremia) that occurs due to the consumption of excess water without adequate replacement of sodium.” (1) This does not mean we are telling you to go out and drink all the gatorades after your workouts though, that would not be the best idea either due to their sugar levels. And please do not give these to your children after their physical activities either. For more info on the goods and bads of gatorade, check out this article

For a more detailed look into water intoxication and how you can prevent it, please read Dr. Axe’s article and tips below.

Never be afraid to ask your coaches to get you a water bottle mid-workout or for help if you are not feeling well during a workout whether it be dehydration or hyperhydration. We are here for YOU and want to keep you as healthy as possible!

If you have any questions or comments, LET US KNOW! We love hearing your personal experiences on things like this.
